So “very American” but I absolutely love the idea of a gender reveal party and having not had one before, and this being our very last baby I simply had to have one, just this once.
So how to go about it? Well it was a little last minute in the planning and only occurred to me just days before we were due to have our gender reveal scan and so very last minute which really isn’t like me, hmmm, ok well maybe it is, I tell myself I work better under pressure haha! I contacted my nearest and dearest and invited them to our home for the weekend after our scan.
These gorgeous baby pink peonies arrived from my faves at Bloom & Wild on the morning of my gender scan and I should have known then it would be a girl.
My husband on the other hand wasn’t too convinced about having a gender reveal party terming it “pointless”. Humph! But he loves a good BBQ so I sold it to him on the basis of a BBQ with friends where we’d just happen to have a little reveal. What I hadn’t told him was that I had ordered a cake, balloons, bought new clothes, ordered a fabulous cake topper from Sophia Victoria Joy and was super excited.
I also had the idea to decorate our “pagoda thingy” in the garden here and decorate it all themed and lovely, but given I had just days to go even I knew this was pushing my luck, so I picked a lovely spot elsewhere in our garden and decided to buy some new picnic benches for everyone to sit on underneath a pretty tree. What my husband didn’t factor was that I wanted him to build the picnic benches so that I could paint them a lovely shade of grey. He even indulged me and put them together for me. I think he’s learned over the years not to upset a pregnant woman haha!
I was super proud of myself as the benches turned out to be just wonderful and super pleased with myself for having painted them and that for the first time when decorating, I hadn’t spent weeks dithering over the shade of grey, I simply didn’t have time. I ordered some new bunting to hang between the trees, bought a matching (to the new benches) coloured bird house as other trees we have here I’ve bought bird houses for and hung them but seemingly I had missed this particular tree out, bought some lovely candles for the table and “waalaa” as they say, a picture perfect seating area in which to have our gender reveal.
I chose to use a gender reveal balloon to make our announcement and there’s only one place I “go to” for balloons and that’s Bubblegum Balloons which are just out of this world amazing.
They kindly sent me two balloons, the all important gender reveal balloon and one incredibly pretty one which simply said “it’s a girl” and oh my, the detail on the “tail” was just wonderful.
I hadn’t factored a windy day into my gender reveal balloon announcement and so we came into our hallway where I “popped” it and WOW! the amount of confetti that exploded absolutely everywhere was awesome! It exceeded all my expectations and was even more fabulous than I had imagined. If you’re looking for balloons for any special occasion then look no further than Bubblegum Balloons.
So to the cake. I was disappointed to learn that my “go to” cake lady had closed her business due to family commitments and given the short time frame I decided to make one! Anyone who knows me knows that I cannot bake so I enlisted the help of Betty Crocker and my husband who at this point was keen to help and a “little more on board” and baked the cake himself while I went and washed my hair! He’s a trooper is my hubby. Credit where credit is due the cake tasted wonderful, perfectly edible and we’ll quickly skim over the bit where we cut out a hole in the middle and filled with pink sweets for an additional “reveal” and the weight caused the one side of the cake to break, split open and was quickly patched up with absolutely loads of buttercream and when served we made sure this part of the cake was at the back but was the source of much hilarity here on the day, much like when it happened the night before as we made it at just after midnight (I did say I was a little last minute) when my husband couldn’t breathe for laughing and I all emotional burst into tears through my laughter!
However it all came together, and we had such fun on the day, lots of love and laughter filled our home and whilst many dear friends were unable to make the day (my fault for leaving it so late to invite them), those that did stayed until quite late into the evening as our children enjoyed playing until it was almost dark outside.
If you’re considering a gender reveal party, go for it, if no other reason that it was a lovely time spent with friends, catching up and enjoying their company and was so wonderful to be able to share our news that we’re having a little girl in the Autumn xoxo
